Hike 13: Geological Overlook Trail

I hadn’t initially planned on hiking with the little today but ended up with a free afternoon so Red Rocks round three it was. We changed it up and went for a sunset hike on the Geogical Overlook Trail. I have never done this one before and it ended up being a bit tougher than I had anticipated.

AllTrails has this rated as easy and 1.1 miles. Part of the trail is even along the road as you come down from the upper parking lot at Red Rocks, so I figured it wouldn’t be too bad. Well, I think in the summer that would be true, but with ice packed, snowy stairs this trail was definitely more on the moderate side...we also tracked at over two miles, which I hadn’t anticipated.

When I hike with B, I usually don’t wear spikes as we are doing easier trails because he does not have any traction. I have yet to find any kiddie spikes so we’re looking into snowshoes (post to come soon!). He was wearing snowboots and I was just wearing my Nikes... let’s just say he was having a much easier time than me, which hasn’t happened before.

Because we were hiking at sunset, the parking lot had plenty of spaces and we didn’t run into a single person on the actual trail, which is a rarity (and honestly not something I gun for while hiking with a five year old). The trail itself is beautiful with the exception of the portion where you are walking along the road to the parking lot. We did this part on our way back to the car so it wasn’t really a big deal and welcome for me as I ended up having to carry the little muffin man the last quarter mile or so. Getting those guns, slowly but surely 😉.

The trail gets pretty high up for only gaining 321 feet of elevation (per AllTrails), so you have a decent outlook of both Red Rocks and the city below. I will likely take little man again when it’s warmer and bit less icy, as this made the trail quite a bit more challenging for us. Until next time, happy hiking ✌🏼🥾❤️.
