Right now I take pictures with my iPhoneX and have a little tripod selfie-stick. And they work just fine. But I had a *slight* inkling that much more could be done with a real camera...and I honestly don’t want to settle for just fine when it comes to my pictures. So, with a rare free Saturday morning ahead, I signed up for a beginner landscape photography class at REI.
The class was from 9:30-11:30 at the Greenwood Village REI. I found the course while searching for first aide courses and it was only $15 for members. Surprise, I’m an REI member, so I paid my fee and was excited to see what was in store...literally. There were five other people in the course, which was great because the instructor had the freedom to answer all our questions. Each person came in with a different level of skill, which made the class that much more fun. It was held in one of their back rooms, which was the perfect size for the class (a little chilly, though, so bring a hoodie).
The instructor was honestly phenomenal! She was super comfortable teaching and her passion for photography was apparent and greatly appreciated. We went over some basics, like the rule of thirds, leading lines, etc. and if you’re newer to the world of photography like I am, this was a solid overview of the basics. I even learned that there’s a grid setting on the iPhone and that alone made the class well worth it!
We did several exercises that focused on moving subjects and depth. When I say exercises, I mean actually get your happy ass out into the store and take some pictures! Having only an iPhone, I was very limited to what I could do and seeing all the cool things everyone could do with their cameras made me want one. Badly. I don’t feel limited by subject matter or my point of view, but not having a real camera is a limitation that I’m just going to have to work with until I can afford one. I was goi g to go to a camera store, but didn’t because I knew I’d buy one. Being a single mom means i have to be smart with my money and save up for things. And that’s okay, it‘s something I’ve accepted and I’m definitely not lacking in cool experiences over here.
I was pretty jazzed to try out some of what I learned and went to Wash Park. Thank, geese, for being my models. It may have taken 30-some years, but I finally found my “thing.” What a weird feeling to be passionate about something 🤓. I’m so excited to continue to grow and learn, because I know I’ve only scratched the very surface of what I can learn and do with photography. That said, see ya when I have a real camera in my hands, REI, and thank you again for the wonderful class!
